With assignments and exams looming after Christmas, for many students the holidays mean study time is essential for academic success. However, with lots of festivities taking place and events with friends and family planned, it’s easy to procrastinate and forget about revision. Having a healthy balance throughout the break is key. Here’s a few helpful tips to help students enjoy their Christmas, as well as prepare for exams in the New Year.
Dedicate study days
It’s important to be realistic when planning a study schedule over Christmas – no student is going to want to spend the whole of their holidays doing work or revising. We recommend looking at your calendar and dedicating certain days to study and taking set days off such as Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Boxing Day. Plan study sessions between the times you will be the most productive and make sure you stick to your plan. Having days off will break up your schedule and mean you’re having fun but working hard too!
Mix up your revision
It’s important to try and mix up your revision techniques throughout the Christmas break. Not only will this make it more interesting but it will be a much more productive use of your time. For example, avoid continuously re-reading your notes over and over again, as this can mean you switch off and lose interest. Instead try making some posters for your notes or tell a family member everything you can remember on a certain topic. It’s also a good idea to not study one subject for too long. Enjoy the festivities!
Try not to cram too much into the few weeks you have off as it can be easy to burn out. Balance during the festive season really is the key to your happiness and success. Spend time with family and friends and enjoy a lie in or a late-night film. Book in study days but also plan time away from revision and festive activities so you can relax and recharge your batteries.
Looming exams or assignment hand-ins can be extremely stressful. However, avoiding stress at all costs will do you the world of good and benefit you in the long run. If you start yourself feeling overwhelmed or frustrated whilst studying, remember it’s okay to step away for a bit. Head out for a walk, go and chat with family and friends, read a magazine or listen to some music. Just 15 minutes away from your study zone will give yourself a much-needed mental break and you can return to work with a fresh perspective. Make a plan for the new term
The Christmas holidays are usually over in a flash, so it’s a great idea to make a quick plan for the new term ahead. This will help you feel less anxious for the first few weeks back but also mean your studies don’t suffer. Map out what work you will have left to complete or which exams you will need to revise for and when. Create a plan around your regular school or college schedule so you’ll be prepared when you don’t have as much free time.
